Astrology is More Than Personality
Reclaiming Timing, Cycles, and Cosmic Context
In today’s pop astrology, the focus is often on personality—descriptions of traits, behaviors, and compatibility. It’s usually about “who you are” and “how you act,” reduced to a list of qualities based on your Sun sign. While this lens can offer valuable self-reflection, it barely scratches the surface of what astrology is capable of.
The Ancient Roots of Timing-Based Astrology
Astrology has much older—and deeper—origins. The roots of the Western tradition trace back over 2,000 years to Mesopotamia, becoming formalized in Hellenistic Egypt around the 1st and 2nd centuries BCE. This was the birth of a technical and philosophical system, deeply influenced by Stoicism, that focused not on traits, but on fate, timing, life phases, and planetary rulership.
Astrology in this era was a map of time—a way to understand the changing conditions of life, the planetary periods we each move through, and how different parts of our chart become activated over time. It used methods like annual profections, zodiacal releasing, and other timing techniques to support people in navigating personal transitions and external challenges.
How We Ended Up With Horoscopes
The shift toward modern, personality-based astrology began in the 20th century, especially with the rise of pop media and psychological astrology.
A key turning point was in 1930, when British astrologer R.H. Naylor wrote a Sun-sign-based prediction column in the Sunday Express, tied to the birth of Princess Margaret. It was an instant hit. Soon after, horoscope columns became a staple in newspapers and magazines across the Western world.
Sun sign astrology worked well in this format—it was simple, accessible, and scalable. Everyone knew their birthday, and therefore their Sun sign. Around the same time, astrologers like Dane Rudhyar and Carl Jung helped popularize a psychological approach to astrology that emphasized inner growth and personality insight over external events and fate.
The result? Astrology was reframed as a tool for self-analysis rather than a cosmic calendar. It became more about “What’s your sign?” than “Where are you in your cycle?” Most people now associate astrology with generalized, daily horoscopes rather than the intricate, personalized systems of ancient astrological practice.
Returning to Astrology’s Original Purpose
My work is part of a growing movement to reconnect astrology with its original purpose: a tool for understanding timing, navigating transition, and reclaiming personal rhythm.
Using techniques rooted in Hellenistic astrology—like annual profections, solar returns, and planetary periods—I offer a timing-based approach that’s less about defining who you are and more about understanding the cycles and rhythms of life. Where are you in your current life cycle? What’s being activated right now? What themes are rising in this season of your life?
Astrology can be much more than a personality description—it can be a guide through change, and a companion in the complexity of being human.
